When a B2B buyer opens a conversation with an AI model to evaluate vendors, that conversation is not indexed, not crawled, not tracked by any brand monitoring tool your marketing team is running. It is invisible to your share of voice measurement. And it is where decisions increasingly get made.


What Traditional Share of Voice Actually Measures — and Where It Stops

Share of voice, in its original form, measured ad spend relative to category spend. In SEO, it became organic search impression share across a defined keyword set. Different formula, same core logic: presence is presence. Whether you ranked first for a query or ran a full-page ad, being seen was being seen.

That logic breaks in AI-mediated research. Two brands can appear in the same AI response and receive treatment that is functionally opposite. One is the answer. One is the cautionary note. Here is what the numbers say. According to a March 2026 analysis of 680 million AI citations by Averi, 73% of B2B buyers now use AI tools during their research process. A separate benchmark of 828 enterprise B2B companies by Walker Sands found that the median enterprise brand appears in just 3% of relevant AI Overviews — and 4.6% of enterprise brands aren't cited at all. A third finding, from LLM Pulse's analysis of the same data, cuts more directly: B2B brands that have mapped their AI citation footprint consistently find they appear in fewer than 30% of relevant category queries, regardless of their conventional SEO rankings.

That last figure is the structural problem. Traditional SEO rank and AI visibility are not the same distribution. Large brands dominate training data by volume — press coverage thick, review profiles extensive. But AI models do not weight brand presence by volume of raw mentions. They synthesize characterizations from the nature of content. A brand appearing thousands of times in review threads debating its pricing and contract terms has a rich signal — but a contested one. The model learns the debate, not a clean endorsement.

The smaller competitor that owns three well-cited, definitive answers for specific use cases generates a cleaner characterization. The model learned one thing about that brand: it is the answer for this problem. That is what surfaces when a buyer asks.

Most B2B brands optimize content for search volume. AI models weight what is cited and treated as authoritative — which is not the same distribution. The high-traffic query has fifteen competing pieces. The lower-volume authoritative answer that gets cited in trusted comparison posts carries disproportionate weight in the model's characterization. Most brands are targeting the wrong set entirely.
