SEO optimizes for an algorithm that ranks pages. GEO optimizes for a model that builds opinions. They are not the same discipline, and treating them as if they are is the fastest way to become invisible in AI-generated answers.
The specific difference that matters: LLMs don't index URLs — they absorb topic domains. They don't count links — they weight cited sources. They don't read schema markup — they extract direct prose answers. The inputs are different, the processing is different, and therefore the optimization techniques are completely different.
What follows are 10 techniques with the exact mechanism and exact implementation. No theory. Each one is something you can start this week, and each one either has no SEO parallel at all, or would actively work against you in traditional search.
Topic Cluster Saturation (Not Keyword Density)
LLMs don't index URLs. When a model absorbs training data or retrieves context, it builds a probabilistic picture of which brands and sources own a given subject domain. If your brand appears repeatedly across every subtopic in a space — not just on one optimized page — the model begins to associate your name with that domain at a foundational level. Keyword density is meaningless here. Coverage depth is everything.
Use ChatGPT or a tool like Semrush to generate every subtopic under your main topic area — aim for 15–20. For each subtopic, publish a standalone 600–800 word piece that answers one specific question definitively. Link them together. The goal is that when an LLM encounters your content space, it finds your brand present at every node, not just the center. Don't optimize for keyword density. Optimize for coverage depth.
In SEO, publishing 20 thin pages on sub-topics without strong keyword targets and backlinks would dilute domain authority and waste crawl budget. In GEO, those same pages are infrastructure.
Entity Definition Publishing
LLMs need explicit, definitional content to build accurate entity representations. If you don't define what you are, the model infers it from surrounding context — which is frequently wrong, especially for new or niche categories. This is particularly dangerous for B2B SaaS companies with names that don't describe their function. The model will hallucinate a category for you based on adjacent signals.
Publish a dedicated "What is [your brand]?" page written like an encyclopedia entry — specific, definitional, third-person where possible, zero marketing language. Structure it as: "[Brand] is [precise category]. It monitors [X], measures [Y], and produces [Z]. It is designed for [specific audience]. It is not [common misclassification]." That last "is not" line is not optional. LLMs frequently confuse categories at the boundary. For example: "Shensuo is a brand narrative intelligence platform. It is not a social listening tool and it is not an SEO rank tracker."
In SEO, this level of definitional self-description reads as low-value content and would never earn backlinks. It exists purely for AI entity accuracy.
Structured Answer Blocks (SABs)
LLMs don't read JSON-LD schema. They read prose. But they strongly favor content structured as a complete, direct answer to a specific question — because that format is easy to extract, summarize, and relay to a user asking the same question conversationally. FAQ schema helps Google display formatted results in search. SABs help LLMs retrieve and relay accurate answers in chat. These are different jobs with different formats.
On every key page, add 5–8 sections formatted as: Q: [exact question a buyer would ask] followed by A: [direct, complete answer in 2–3 sentences]. Lead each answer with the direct response in the first sentence — don't bury the conclusion. Use the exact phrasing a buyer would use, not internal product language. "What does Shensuo do?" not "About our platform." LLMs extract the most direct answer, not the most elegantly written one.
SABs are not FAQ schema — don't add schema markup to them. They're purely prose-optimized for LLM extraction, not SERP formatting.
Comparative Positioning Statements
When a user asks an LLM "what's the best tool for X?" the model is synthesizing a recommendation from everything it knows about the space. If your brand has no comparative content, the model has no language to position you against alternatives. Worse, it may pull comparative language from your competitors' pages — positioning you the way they want, not the way you'd choose. LLMs trust balanced content over one-sided advocacy.
Publish structured comparison pages — "[Your Brand] vs [Competitor A]", "[Your Brand] vs [Competitor B]." Write them as honest, balanced comparisons. Structure each page as: (1) Who each tool is for, (2) The key difference, (3) A feature comparison table, (4) When to choose each. That last section is the most important. It signals to models that you understand your own positioning and aren't claiming to win every use case.
In SEO, writing about competitors on your own site rarely generates backlinks and can attract negative associations. In GEO, it is how models learn to describe you accurately in context.
Cited Source Building (Not Link Building)
LLMs don't count links. They absorb content from authoritative sources and build associations between entities. A single citation in a Wikipedia article, a TechCrunch piece, or an industry benchmark report is worth more for AI visibility than five hundred backlinks from random domains. The question is not "who links to me?" It's "do I appear in the sources LLMs were trained on and retrieve from?"
Identify 10–15 authoritative sources in your category that LLMs are likely trained on or retrieve from. Target them specifically: submit to guest post programs, respond to journalist requests (HARO/Qwoted), provide data that industry publications can cite, contribute to Wikipedia where genuinely applicable. The goal is not a link back to your site — it's your brand name appearing inside those sources as a named entity in context.
Pursuing citations over backlinks is the opposite of traditional link building. Backlinks with no brand-in-body citation do almost nothing for GEO.
Persona-Based Prompt Coverage
Search queries are short keyword strings. AI prompts are full sentences, often conversational, and they vary dramatically based on who is asking. A CFO asking about brand monitoring asks completely different questions than a Head of Marketing — different vocabulary, different frame, different concerns. If your content only addresses one persona's language, you're invisible to every other persona's prompts. This is prompt gap analysis, and there is no SEO keyword tool that surfaces it.
Ask ChatGPT: "If you were a [specific persona] at a [specific company type] looking for [your product category], what questions would you ask?" Do this for each of your 5 core buyer personas. Use the output as direct article titles and FAQ entries. You're identifying which conversational queries your content doesn't currently answer. Every gap is a content piece to publish.
Keyword tools like Ahrefs or Semrush have no data on what prompts people are asking AI. This analysis has no SEO equivalent tool or workflow.
Negative Hallucination Correction Pages
LLMs hallucinate specific wrong facts about brands — wrong pricing tiers, wrong features, wrong founding dates, wrong use cases, wrong company size. These are not random; they follow a pattern: the model interpolated from adjacent data that happens to be incorrect. Critically, these hallucinations persist in model outputs until corrected content is trained in or added to retrieval context. They do not self-correct over time.
Run your brand through four or five major LLMs (ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Copilot). Document every factual error. Then publish a "Facts About [Brand]" page structured as: "[Common misconception]: [Accurate fact]." Keep the tone factual, not defensive. "Shensuo is not only for enterprise brands. It starts at $29/month and is used by solo marketers and agencies of all sizes." Publish it, get it indexed, and link to it from your main pages so it enters retrieval context.
In SEO, a corrections page has no keyword value and would never attract linking. It exists purely to inject accurate facts into LLM retrieval.
Recency Signaling
LLMs weight recency heavily for anything in a fast-moving category. If your foundational pages were published 18–24 months ago with no visible updates, models may treat your brand as a legacy player — or skip your content entirely in favor of fresher sources. In a category like AI-driven marketing tools, 18 months old might as well be ancient history. Recency signals aren't just for users — they're for the retrieval layer.
Identify your 10 most important pages. Add a visible "Last updated: [Month Year]" near the top of each. Then add one paragraph at the top of each page: "Updated April 2026: [one specific thing that changed or was confirmed]." This doesn't require rewriting the page — it requires a short factual addition and a visible date. The signal you're sending: this content reflects the current state of the world.
Adding fake "updated" dates to unchanged content is a known SEO spam tactic that Google penalizes. In GEO, the update should be genuine — but even a brief, honest addition is sufficient.
Cross-Platform Entity Consistency
LLMs build brand entity models by aggregating mentions across the web. If your brand is described as a "narrative monitoring tool" on LinkedIn, a "competitive intelligence platform" on Crunchbase, an "AI brand tracker" in your press release, and an "LLM visibility tool" on Product Hunt, the model builds a composite, ambiguous entity. That ambiguity translates directly into inaccurate or hedged recommendations when a buyer asks an LLM about your category.
Write one canonical 2-sentence brand description. Lock it. Then paste it — word for word — into every platform you control: LinkedIn About section, Crunchbase overview, G2 profile, Product Hunt tagline, GitHub README, app store descriptions, press kit boilerplate. Every platform. The consistency is the mechanism. LLMs weight repeated, consistent descriptions from multiple independent sources as high-confidence signals about what an entity is.
For SEO, using identical boilerplate copy across many sites would be flagged as duplicate content. For GEO, the repetition is the point.
Conversational FAQ Depth
SEO FAQs are optimized for extraction: Google pulls the shortest complete answer for the featured snippet. LLMs work differently. They read the full answer, synthesize it with adjacent content, and relay a richer version to the user. Thin, one-sentence answers get deprioritized in favor of sources that provide more complete context. If your FAQ answers are SEO-optimized, they're under-serving the LLM retrieval layer by a factor of three to five.
Rewrite your FAQ section. For every item, use this four-part structure: (1) the direct answer, (2) the reason or mechanism behind it, (3) a specific example, (4) a closing sentence that connects back to the buyer's situation. This is 4–5× more content per FAQ item than SEO best practice requires. That depth is exactly what LLMs pull from when answering buyer questions in your category. If your FAQ is currently seven sentences total, it needs to be thirty.
Long FAQ answers with no keyword focus are actively penalized by Google's featured snippet algorithm, which favors brevity. For GEO, the depth is the asset.

Every technique above has a specific mechanism rooted in how LLMs process and retrieve information. Topic cluster saturation works because models build domain associations, not page rankings. Entity definition publishing works because models need explicit definitional content to represent you accurately. Negative hallucination correction works because LLM errors persist until corrected content enters the retrieval layer.
